Tobacco sales – when I was kid, Mom and Dad would take my brother and I to Wildwood, New Jersey for a vacation every year. When we went to the beach, once in a while my dad would give me a buck or two, point me to the concession stand and say, “Go get me a pack of Lucky Strikes.” I’d go over, ask the guy running the booth for the smokes, hand over the cash, and take the cigarettes back to Dad. NO BIG DEAL. Since 1997, in New Mexico, that’s been a fourth-degree felony, all thanks to an Executive Order from Waco Willie Clinton. The very concept of the background check flies in the face of the presumption of innocence until guilt is proven and assumes the opposite – guilty til proven innocent – “You say you’re not an axe-murdering child rapist? Prove it!”
Notes from Life, Etc.
- Get new RAM cards for my laptop (the original ones went out on me on Tuesday, 8 November) – this will be an upgrade, as it originally came with 3 GB, and I’ll get 4 GB as replacements. Been meaning to get another GB anyway.
- Get a replacement idler pulley for the car. I was able to get the new serpentine belts on, but the idler pulley also went out, which I discovered after getting the new belts on. The new part is only ∅20 (plus tax, of course), but getting it where it needs to go in the engine compartment is NOT going to be fun at all.
- Finish watching Season 1 of Fringe (saved on the hard drive).
- Play around with some Unix stuff I’ve downloaded – new versions of Linux, BSD, Solaris, etc.
- I took my test on our class projects today. I completed it in under 10 minutes and got a perfect score. I need not have worried, despite one of my classmates not sending out the questions he came up with for his project.
- I’m thinking of “recycling” my project presentation into a speech for my political and social groups (LPNM, etc.).
- The Fedora 10 installation on “my” Dell (GX-270, for what it’s worth) sometimes boots up to a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, with NO way to upgrade it to 1280 x 1024 (much less 1920 x 1200, as I can get with the HP running MS Windows XP SP3 that’s side-by-side with that Dell). The only solution seems to be to restart it or shut it down, sometimes many times. Really aggravating.
- I’m waiting to hear back from the rest of the LPNM about the prospective U.S. Senate candidacy of Allen J. Kessel, out of Santa Fe.
- CV-2009-12562 drags on still . . . .
- The debate rages on as to whether or not the LP’s National HQ should move to 1428 Duke St in Alexandria, Virginia. I’m all for it – it’s way past time that National got out of the rat-infested, overpriced Watergate.
- I created a Google+ page for the LPNM today.
- I’ve had a few inquiries about the upcoming 2012 Annual State Convention from prospective presidential candidates and their supporters. There are quite a few this year, as there were in 2008. Hopefully, this time it won’t be quite the circus it was back then.
- Nothing new from then BTPNM yet – generating and maintaining interest in the LPNM is hard enough. It doesn’t help that people confuse the BTP with the Tea Party movement.
- Check the BTP’s official site or Facebook group for updates.
