LP Monday Message: High Unemployment on Labor Day
September 6, 2010Dear Friend of Liberty,
It’s hard to celebrate Labor Day when unemployment is 9.6 percent.
Government interference is the single biggest cause of unemployment. Minimum wage laws, OSHA, ADA, etc., etc., make it difficult both to hire and to fire workers. (And when it’s difficult to fire workers, it’s much less likely that they will be hired in the first place.) To reduce unemployment, we need to start repealing laws!
Section 2.7 of the Libertarian Party platform states: “We support repeal of all laws which impede the ability of any person to find employment. We oppose government-fostered forced retirement. We support the right of free persons to associate or not associate in labor unions, and an employer should have the right to recognize or refuse to recognize a union. We oppose government interference in bargaining, such as compulsory arbitration or imposing an obligation to bargain.”
I read today that President Obama wants another $50 billion in Keynesian stimulus spending. Stimulus supporters think that government spending creates jobs. What they don’t seem to understand is that the money is taken out of the private sector, which decreases private sector spending and investment, and that destroys jobs. I believe that stimulus spending destroys more jobs than it creates. We’d be much better off with the laissez-faire policies advocated by Austrian economic theory.
It makes me mad to think of all the ways the Republican and Democratic congresses, and presidents Bush and Obama, have hurt the private sector with all their stimulus and bailout programs. (Remember George W. Bush’s 2008 “Economic Stimulus Act” with all the $600 “rebate” checks?)
If you’d like to help fight them, please participate in Quiz Across America.
Sincerely,
Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National CommitteeP.S. If you have not already done so, please join the Libertarian Party. We are the only political party dedicated to free markets and civil liberties. You can also renew your membership. Or, you can make a contribution separate from membership.

Partisans of the American Southwest v.1 (A Thought Experiment)
Partisans of the American SouthwestBlogs – Blogger / WordPress
Email groups – Google / Yahoo!
EmailMission
- Networking and training – be for NM Patriots, Constitutionalists, etc., what al-Qaeda is for Islamic terrorism
- Politics should be FUN, too
Invite selected members from LPNM, BTPNM, RGF, AC4L, TRT-NM, NM Linux / open-source groups, Friends of Capitalism, Tea Parties, RLCNM, etc.
Committees
- Correspondence – communications / networking
- Revolution – activism: electioneering, public speaking, rallies, street theater
- Safety – preparedness, resistance
- Vigilance – oversight of government activity
- Activities / functions of committees will probably overlap with each other
- Committees to consist of chair and vice-chair
- Put out lists of tasks that need doing
Two types of unity –
- Common purpose and principles – ideal path
- Leader tells dissenters “shut up and do as you’re told” – comes up all too often
Leadership style –
- Lead by example is the ideal way
- Don’t be stupid – use common sense, rational thought
- Check your facts and premises
- Don’t take the rank and file for granted
Invitation-only events do NOT get broadcast to the general public or membership – Send ONLY to those on the invite list.
Keep speakers local when possible – focus on developing speakers in the state. Speakers from out-of-state cost more, plus travel time makes scheduling more difficult.
Keep meals at events as no-host when possible – Saves headaches with planning
- No worries about preferences, dietary requirements, shortages / leftovers
- Can lessen the price of tickets at the door
Fundraising
- Non-profit organizations can hold up to two (2) raffles per year, per New Mexico State Law
- Raffle off a rifle, pistol, etc.
How to get volunteers motivated? How to recruit?
- Mass appeal (warm bodies) vs snob appeal (Ex: USMC – “The Few. The Proud. The Marines.”)
- Mass appeal – more people will join and get things done (hopefully)
- Snob appeal – “do you have what it takes . . .” – better quality people?
- Both approaches needed somewhat
- Create larger group for the strap-hangers and camp followers
- Create “elite” group for the people who get things done
- Selection process / standards?
Internal affairs – Allow as much transparency as possible
- Easier to avoid “conspiracy” charges from government, media, etc.
- Lets the membership know what’s going on
- How can we call for openness from government if we’re not open ourselves?
Newsletter template – The Partisan – already on flash drive

his political views are insane and I think libertarianism is discredited,
Look at the great job that Bush and Obama have done with Keynesian theory, foreign policy, etc. — how much are you loving the corporate bailouts? How much “stimulus” cash has made it your way?
C’mon now, you can admit it — you’ve gotten yourself a cushy, climate-controlled position counting and sorting paperclips (straightening them out is someone else’s job!) for Ø35K a year plus medical plan and “guaranteed” pension (you don’t really think that Missouri’s state employees’ retirement plan is any more solvent than New Mexico’s . . ?), and a Paul Administration would put you back in the . . . <gasp!> . . . the private sector! NO! the HORROR!
but I can still give him credit when he deserves it:
You almost got one right . . .
Here; he’s on the side of the proverbial angles.
Like I said — almost — “proverbial angles” — gotta love it! What’s an English class at the local community college cost these days? Around here, it’s about 70 bucks, including textbook, notebook and pen, etc. Seriously.
- Re: Can the Tea Party Deliver? —
I’m more worried about January, 2011 — let’s say that the Tea Party movement does put enough Republicans into the House and Senate to regain the majority they held from 1995 to 2007. What happens after that?
- Will those Republicans stick to the Tea Party message of Constitutionally-limited government, individual rights, and fiscal responsibility that got them elected?
- If the answer to Question 1 is “No,” will the Tea Party retain enough enthusiasm for the message to give those Republicans the boot when they come up for re-election?
Based on what I saw after 21 January 2001 (George W. Bush’s inauguration), I’m guessing the answer to both questions will be a resounding “No.”
I would love to be proven wrong here — only time will tell, in the end.

“What next, heading to North Carolina to tell them that NASCAR is a bastardization of chariot racing?”
Well . . . it is, but that doesn’t change the fact that NASCAR got its start in resistance to an immoral law (Prohibition).
Anyone care to tell me how many cities have levied taxes to pay for the construction of rugby arenas like they have done for the NFL, NBA, MLB?
